Without a Kazakhstan eSIM set up in advance, you're either scrambling for a local SIM at the airport or crossing your fingers that your roaming plan won't bankrupt you. Neither is a great start to the trip. Get it sorted at home, activate it before you fly, and you'll be online the moment you land - ready to go, no detours required.

If you're mostly based in Almaty or Astana and working from accommodation with solid WiFi, 5 to 8 GB will get you through comfortably. Spontaneous navigation around the city, some social media, and occasional searches are all covered - honestly, you don't need more than that as long as you're not spending much time outside the cities.

For a city trip covering multiple destinations - say Almaty, Astana, and Shymkent - plan on at least 8 to 12 GB. The distances between cities here are long, navigation runs the whole time, and you don't want to arrive in a new city already throttled and struggling to find a restaurant or a metro stop.

Don't make the mistake of picking a plan based on price alone - that's how you end up throttled somewhere between Almaty and the Charyn Canyon with no way to navigate. The first thing to check is when the validity period starts: does it kick in on activation or on first use? On a longer Kazakhstan trip, that distinction can mean several days of paid validity gone before you even arrive. Check this before you buy, or you'll regret it on the road.

Most people overlook what actually happens when the high-speed data runs out. Some plans throttle so aggressively that navigation becomes useless - and that's a serious problem on long drives through areas where you're already working with limited signal. It tends to be buried in the fine print, so check the plan details carefully, especially coverage, validity, and any speed restrictions after the main allowance is used up. If you're planning to tether a laptop, confirm that hotspot use is included - not all plans allow it.

On price: work out the cost per GB rather than just looking at the headline figure, and factor in the validity period. A cheap plan with a short validity window can be a poor deal on a two-week Kazakhstan trip. More data and a longer validity period cost a bit more up front, but it's worth it here - this is not a destination where you want to run short.

In Almaty and Astana, no problem - mobile internet runs well and you won't be thinking about coverage at all. Shymkent and other larger cities are generally fine too. Along the main highways connecting major cities, coverage holds up reasonably well for the most part.

Signal gets patchy and sometimes disappears entirely - that's just the reality of traveling in one of the world's largest countries. It's not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to prepare.
