Download offline maps over WiFi before you go - that saves real data on the road and keeps you navigating even when the signal gets weak.

The first thing to check - and most people skip this - is whether Puerto Rico is explicitly listed as a covered destination. It's a US territory, so plenty of US plans include it, but not all of them do. Don't assume. Next: validity. Does the clock start when you activate the plan or when you actually use it for the first time? On a shorter trip this can genuinely eat into your usable days before you even arrive. Also check what happens when your data runs out. Some plans throttle so hard that navigation becomes unusable - that's not a minor inconvenience when you're trying to find your way through the mountains.

On price, don't just look at the total. Work out the price per GB and match it against the validity period - that's the number that actually tells you whether a plan is worth it. And if you're planning to tether a laptop or tablet, check whether hotspot use is permitted. It's often not mentioned upfront, and finding out it's blocked when you need it most is exactly the kind of thing that ruins an afternoon.

In San Juan and along the main tourist coastlines, no problem - coverage runs well and you won't notice any gaps during normal use. The same goes for most of the larger towns and popular beach areas around the island.

Head into the interior - the mountain roads, the rainforest around El Yunque, the more remote parts of the southwest - and the picture changes. Signal gets thinner out there, and in some spots you'll lose it entirely. That's not a disaster if you're prepared for it. Download your maps and any key information over WiFi before you head out, and you'll be fine even when the signal drops.
